Award Winning Author Visit

Dear Parent/Carer,

Following the success of World Book Week we are continuing our celebration of all things reading related with a visit from world-renowned 2015 Carnegie Medal Winning author, Tanya Landman on Friday 11th March. Tanya will be leading workshops during the morning to selected Y8/9 students followed by an insightful talk into writing and reading to all Y9,10,11 and invited Y12/13 students. If any parents would also like to join us please do get in touch.

Tanya won the prestigious author award for her brilliant novel, ‘Buffalo Soldier’ – “A deeply thrilling adventure story dealing with race and gender inequality set in the immediate aftermath of the American Civil War, Buffalo Soldier is a must-read for teens of all genders." --Amnesty International UK. In fact our school Carnegie Shadowing Reading Group found this book outstanding and instantly rated it a big hit.

Tanya’s new novel-‘ Hell and High Water’ captures the life of young Caleb, exploring prejudice and corruption of the ruling classes - 1752. Devon. England. When his father is arrested and transported to the Colonies, Caleb is left alone. After a desperate journey in search of an aunt he's never met he receives a strange, cold welcome. Then a body washes up on the nearby beach and Caleb is caught up in a terrifying net of lies and intrigue. Soon he and his new family are in mortal danger.

Tanya’s writing is highly engaging, she brings the past to life with her in depth research which immerses the reader in another time period with absolute ease and realism. We can’t recommend her books high enough for teen boys and girls. We have some of her books in the Library if students would like to get reading in advance of her visit.

Both Buffalo Soldier and Hell and High Water will be available to buy at discounted prices-£7 and £10 (cash only please) courtesy of Jarrolds Book Department. These can be pre-ordered and collected at lunchtime on the 11th March OR purchased after the talk- please order with Mrs Gill in the library. Students can then get their books signed by Tanya Landman after the talk.

We hope your child will enjoy the vibrant and humorous storytelling that Tanya provides.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Gill (Librarian) and Mrs Hunt (Head of Literacy)
