Attendance at Neatherd High School

Research commissioned by the Department for Education shows that missing school for even a day can mean a child is less likely to achieve good grades. At Neatherd and in the Dereham Cluster, our aim is to work with parents to ensure that all our young people receive the most from their education and reach their full potential.

The law requires all parents to ensure that their child attends school regularly. The Government is clear that no child should miss school apart from in exceptional circumstances and schools must continue to take steps to reduce absence.

Our local authority operates a system where there is legal intervention when:

  • A child has attendance of 85% or less with 15% unauthorised absence over a 6 week period.
  • There is below 90% attendance within a 12 week period where some or all of the absences are due to unauthorised term time holiday absence.

We are bound to refer students who fall into either of these categories to the Local Authority for action to be considered. A Fixed Penalty Notice could then be issued of £60 per parent per child.

Useful Attendance Terms:

Attendance Panels – We use these half hour meetings to flag up concerns with attendance and put together a plan to improve attendance over a six week period.

Fast-Track Meetings – These meetings exist within a legal framework with the Cluster Enforcement Officer. There will be a six week review before a Penalty Notice is considered.

Cluster Attendance Support Officer –Sian Brisco attends panel meeting and offers support to families.

Persistent Absenteeism – Any student who has attendance of less than 91% at the Easter Holidays is deemed a Persistent Absentee.

Fit for School Criteria – This is an agreed cluster wide criteria for sickness.  Please do send you child to school with minor signs of illness including a minor cold, tiredness, a cough, a headache, a tummy ache.  Please do not send your child to school if they are vomiting or have diarrhoea.

Medical Evidence – Please provide medical evidence wherever you can. We ask for medical evidence when there is long term absence or when attendance is below 90%.

Rewards Trips – To quality for the Rewards Trip at Neatherd, your attendance needs to be over 95%.
