Welcome to the languages department

Our vision is that students feel confident and enjoy learning a foreign language, with the opportunity to experience other cultures and use their language skills in and out of the classroom. Our teachers work hard to inspire students at Neatherd with a lifelong interest in other languages. We strive to give them the communication skills they will need to succeed in an ever more international world and a greater insight into the fascinating cultures behind their language of study.

Key Stage 3

In Year 7, all students study French. Students in Sets 1 and 2 will spend half the year studying French and half the year studying Spanish. Towards the end of the year, those students will choose which of the two languages they wish to continue in Year 8. Students will study one language thoroughly in Years 8 and 9, equipping themselves with the core vocabulary, grammatical knowledge, and confidence they will need on their language learning journey.

Students in Set 4 who require additional support with numeracy and literacy will have a reduced timetable in languages and will have additional sessions to help them improve their English and maths.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4, we offer GCSE French and Spanish as core languages to be studied and enjoyed. There is the opportunity for students to study two languages in Year 10 and Year 11.

We currently run a week-long trip to Normandy during Curriculum Enhancement week for our Year 7 pupils. We have links with schools in Spain and France, allowing us to participate in correspondence projects between many of our students and French and Spanish students. In addition, we promote the love of language learning through our Language Society that meets once a week. Students are invited to come and enjoy foreign language film viewings and participate in international holidays and celebrations.

Our team

We are an enthusiastic and dedicated department and work hard to make sure that the learning a language is a positive experience for our pupils. We are forward-thinking, supportive, and committed to sharing ideas and resources. In addition, we are each passionate about languages and have spent time working or studying abroad, enabling us to be expert language-learners ourselves and the ability to share our own insights into different cultures. There are currently 5 full-time and 1 part-time members of staff.

Lead Teaching

We aim to be at the forefront of teaching and learning in MFL and have worked closely with CILT and the DfE on various national initiatives. In 2005, 2009, and again in 2015 we were awarded the International School Award in recognition of our international ethos and in 2006 we featured in the Lord Dearing Languages Review and Consultation Report as an example of good practice in language teaching.
