Norwich Castle Visit 2008

History Visit to Norwich Castle 2008

On Wednesday 2nd July 2008 ninety Year 9 History students visited Norwich Castle (a 500 year old prison!) to help prepare them for their GCSE ‘Crime, Protest and Punishment Across Time’ unit which they will be beginning next year. Pictures from the day are shown below.

Students were given an expert guided tour of the grounds and (rather scarily!) the dungeons and then had the opportunity to analyse documents and handle artefacts such as man traps, death masks, leg irons, and even a ducking stool. The highlight of the day, however, was the afternoon trial of Wymondham man James Rush, aka Stephen, who was tried and hanged for “a crime of the deepest dye”. Mr. Uddin has been nominated for an Oscar for his role as Judge Rolfe and he was supported by a stellar cast. Rush’s trial, execution, and burial all took place inside the castle grounds which we visited which made this element of local history all the more powerful.

Students were asked to reflect on the trip once they had arrived back in school. Below is a selection of their comments:

“A once in a lifetime experience … so go if you get the chance”
“The documents were a fine taster for GCSE”
“The trial put everything we learnt over the whole day into practice”
“This trip was awesome – and the rain held off!”
“Legendary – lost my voice shouting at the actors”
“Much better than normal lessons”
“I found the dungeon objects the best – even if they were a bit scary”
“Is it any wonder I love history? The teachers are great, the subject is brilliant, and this trip was just the best”
“I was a bit worried, but now I can’t wait to start studying GCSE History in Year 10”

The attitude of the students made the trip immensely pleasurable for me personally in my last trip at Neatherd High school and the whole history department is now more excited than ever about the possibility of taking such exemplary students to France and Belgium next year.

Kind thanks also to all the parents and guardians for their support of the trip and also to Mr. Uddin, Mrs. Todd, Mr. Carvell, Miss. Battersby, Miss, Moss, and Mr. Uthman for helping out on the day.
