Geography Field Trip to Iceland

3rd November 2011

Dear Parents/Guardians,

GEOGRAPHY TRIP TO ICELAND – OCTOBER 2012
The Geography department is planning a field visit to Iceland for students who are considering studying Geography at GCSE. The visit will take place at the beginning of the 2012 October half-term and will last 5 days/4 nights. The field trip is not compulsory and students not attending will not be disadvantaged in terms of the requirements of the GCSE course.

As you can appreciate the organisation of such a visit requires contacting parents very early on in order to gauge the number of students interested before the booking can be confirmed. Unfortunately if there are insufficient numbers interested, the visit may not go ahead primarily because of the increase in cost due to diminishing numbers. However, in order to secure numbers it is likely we will team up with the Geography department at Northgate High School, as we have done with our very successful previous trips.

Based on 35 students going again the trip is likely to be in the region of £780 payable in instalments. This would include flights, accommodation, food, visits and the company of an experienced tour guide provided by Rayburn Tours (www.rayburntours.com).

During the visit students would have the opportunity to see glaciers, waterfalls, geysers, take a ferry to the volcanic island of Heimaey, visit the Thingvellir National Park and go to the Blue Lagoon geothermal swimming pool. Students would also have a chance to explore the capital city, Reykjavik.

We appreciate it may be a big decision to let your son/daughter go on a school trip costing approximately £780 with little information provided in advance. Therefore those declaring an interest will be invited to an optional information evening on Tuesday 15th November at 6:30pm in the school canteen. The evening will include a short presentation about the visit and will also provide you with an opportunity to discuss any issues regarding the trip before making a final decision. If you are unable to attend the evening, an information pack will be sent out to you.

If your son/daughter is interested in the trip to Iceland, please complete and return the form to his/her Geography teacher by Tuesday 15th November. Unfortunately, if there are insufficient numbers of students interested, the visit may not go ahead, primarily because of the increase in cost due to diminishing numbers.

Yours sincerely

FORM………………

My son/daughter would like to express an interest to go on the proposed visit to Iceland, taking place in October 2012. I understand the cost of the trip would be in the region of £780.

I am able / not able to attend the information evening on Tuesday 15th November at 6:30pm.

Trip to China

Dear Parent/Guardian

Cultural Study Visit To China

I am writing to tell you about an exciting opportunity regarding a visit to China in October 2012 in which your child may wish to participate.

Dereham Neatherd High School has been working with the British Council on an exchange programme for five years. This year we want to continue our international cultural exchange with our partner school in NangYang province, Shanghai, China, by organising a student visit to Shanghai. As trip leader I have already been to China in 2008 and 2010 working closely with the British Council, and taking advice from the British embassy on safety abroad.

We are looking for 15 students to visit China and experience the culture and country. This wonderful opportunity will enable students to have first-hand experience of what life is like for students like themselves within a very different and dynamic culture. They will spend part of their time during the trip visiting many important and exciting places of cultural interest, such as Yu Yuan Temple Gardens and the incredible street markets surrounding it, Hangzhou lake resort, The Pearl Tower and the Bund, Tong Li canal village and the vibrant and exciting Cityscape during the day and night. In addition to this, students will spend a number of days in our partner school, sharing experiences with Chinese students and taking part in activities and events. In previous visits many students said the experience of spending time with Chinese students was the highlight of their time in Shanghai. Please do have a look at the school’s website for photographs from our trip in 2010.

The criteria they will need to fulfil to be a part of this experience are:
• Be part of a proactive fund raising group for the exchange
• Create a diary of their experience and update the school blog under the guidance of members of Staff
• Be able to speak to an audience about the exchange
• Be a part of follow up activities when back in Britain
• Preferably be able to host a Chinese student in January 2012
• Be able to work within a group
• Attend Mandarin lessons on Thursdays 3:45 to 4:45 PM

Students will be chosen based on their ability, behaviour, and suitability for this programme of study.

We anticipate that the overall cost of the trip will be £1200. This will cover all expenditure including flight costs, food, accommodation, and all visits and entrance fees. Please note that we hope to reduce this with fund raising and sponsorship. The trip will run from 19th October to 31st October 2012, though there may be an adjustment of a day either side if needed to secure the optimal flight cost. Spending money would be required, though this would be mostly for gifts as all meals will be included. It is important to note that your child will need his/her own passport and a VISA for entry into China. We will make the VISA arrangements when they are required.

If your son/daughter would like to take part in this trip please return the reply slip to Mrs Lovelock by the 9th December 2011. We will be holding an information meeting on 14th December 2011 for interested parents and students where we will provide more detailed information about the trip, the procedures for choosing students and any answers to any of your questions including vaccinations etc. If you are unable to attend the meeting but are interested in your son/daughter taking part in the visit please indicate this on the reply slip so that further information can be given to you directly.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at the school should you require any additional information.

Yours sincerely

Mr Quantrill
International Schools Coordinator

-

Please return this reply slip to Mrs Lovelock before school or during morning break any day except Wednesday by 9th December 2011.

(Name and Form) is interested to participate in the China trip.

I/We will / will not be attending the Information Evening on 14th December (please delete as appropriate).

This year’s Summer School is cross-curricular for all Year 6 pupils who are planning to join us at Neatherd in September. It will incorporate Olympic-related activities in Languages, Dance and Drama, Design Technology and PE. In addition, there will be a day trip to Banham Zoo on Wednesday 25th July. The week will provide an excellent opportunity for your child to get to know some members of staff and familiarise themselves with the high school – as well as having fun and making new friends! Previous years’ evaluations from pupils who attend Summer School always say how much they enjoyed the week, and that they had much more confidence about joining in September.

Year 9 Trip to Bletchley Park

Dear Parent/Carer

Year 9 Bletchley Park

The Mathematics department would like to offer your son/daughter the opportunity to visit Bletchley Park. Bletchley Park is a country house where highly secret work deciphering intercepted German military radio messages was carried out during World War Two. Thousands of people were working there at the end of the war, including a number of early computer pioneers such as Alan Turing.

The nature and scale of the work has only emerged recently, with total secrecy having been observed by all the people involved. Throughout the war, Bletchley Park produced highly important strategic and tactical intelligence used by the Allies (Churchill's "golden eggs"), and it has been claimed that the war in Europe was probably shortened by two years as a result.

Pupils will be studying Codes and Ciphers after half term where we look at how mathematicians were key in finding solutions to the encrypted messages and the techniques they used.

Students will be out of school on Monday 16th July 2012 and will be supervised by members of the Mathematics department at all times. We will travel to Bletchley by coach, leaving school at 7.15am to arrive at 10.00am. During the day, pupils will be given a guided tour by staff at Bletchley Park and complete some activities based around codes and ciphers. They will also be given the opportunity to visit the gift shop. We shall leave Bletchley at 2.30pm and aim to arrive back at school at 5.00pm. Pupils will need to make their own arrangements for arriving to school early and leaving later.

Pupils will need to be in school uniform, including blazer. The cost of the trip will be £20.00. This includes transport and entry to Bletchley Park. Please ensure your son/daughter has a packed lunch and a drink (no glass bottles please), and if they wish, some spending money.

Please find enclosed a parental consent form that will need to be completed (your child will not be allowed to attend without a signed completed consent form) and returned with your payment of £20.00 (cheques made payable to Dereham Neatherd High School) to Mrs Lovelock in the payment collections area (outside Business 1) during morning break on any day except Wednesday between Monday 11th June and Tuesday 19th June 2012 in order that your child can take part in the above visit. Would you please ensure that you supply a contact number for that day on the form and please note that in the event of an emergency, the group can be contacted via the school on 01362 697981 or out of school hours on 07739 339121.

There are limited spaces on this trip and pupils will be accepted on a first come first served basis.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or comments regarding the day.

Yours sincerely

Dear Parent/Carer

“Get set for the Olympics” on 4th July at Neatherd High School

Neatherd High School is inviting your son / daughter to attend our summer Primary Languages event “Get Set for the Olympics!” on Wednesday 4th July. We are offering this event to Year 5 students in the Dereham area and the theme of the day will be the London 2012 Olympic Games as we believe this major sporting event, where a huge range of languages and cultures will be represented, provides a special opportunity to enrich language learning. At our event, we will be offering a variety of multicultural activities, where students will have the opportunity to ‘visit’ different continents and learn about a selection of cultures and languages.

Your child will be collected by coach from their school at ..... on Wednesday 4th July and taken, with accompanying teachers from their school, to Neatherd High School. They will leave Neatherd to return to their school at .....

We are asking for a £3.50 contribution from each student to help fund the cost of the event. I would be grateful if you could complete the slip below and return to your child’s class teacher with the £3.50 contribution by Monday 18th June should you wish your child to take part in this exciting experience.

Please be aware that photographs will be taken on the day and might be used in press articles, for school display purposes and on the school website. If you are concerned about the possibility of your child appearing in a photo while taking part in the event, please do not allow them to attend.

We look forward to welcoming your child to Neatherd on 4th July (appropriately coinciding with the day that the Olympic torch relay comes to Norfolk!)

Year 9 History Trip to France

Dear Parent/Carer,

Year 9 History Trip to WW1 Battlefields

The History Department is planning to run a trip to the battlefields and museums of World War One. The dates are Monday 2nd July – Wednesday 4th July 2012. As well as being an important part of our shared history, the trip will also provide an opportunity for social, moral and emotional development. The trip is open to all students in year 9 but we would particularly recommend it for those considering taking GCSE history next year as it will focus on developing the skills required of history GCSE pupils.

We propose to leave school early (around 2.00 am) on the Monday morning and travel to Ypres in Belgium via the Eurotunnel. Over the course of the three days, pupils will visit the ‘In Flanders Fields’ museum and the battle zone of Hill 60, witness the last post at the Menin Gate memorial and walk the battlefields of the Somme (looking at the preparations and fighting both above and below ground). Students will see important monuments and strategic towns. We should be back in Dereham by early evening approximately 7.00 p.m. on Wednesday.

An exact cost cannot be given until numbers are finalised but we estimate this will be between £170-£200, although we will need a minimum of 35 pupils to run the trip. If you would like your son/daughter to attend please return the attached reply-slips (the reply slip overleaf and the behavioural concern letter) with your non-refundable deposit of £50 to Mrs. Lovelock in the payment collections area (outside Business 1) any day except Wednesday during morning break (11.10am-11.25am). Places are limited to 50 and will be issued on a first come first served basis and for this reason payments will not be taken until week commencing Monday 12th March and will finish by Friday 16th March subject to availability. Cheques should be made payable to Dereham Neatherd High School. In order to ease payment, there will be the opportunity of paying the balance in instalments and we expect these to be during April and May.

It is important to note that your child will need his/her own valid passport and a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to be able to take part in this trip. I will ask for these to be collected immediately after the half term holiday week commencing 11th June 2012. Prior to your son/daughter travelling with us you will be required to complete a consent form and supply us with personal information regarding any medical conditions and special dietary needs that he/she may have. These forms will be forwarded to you at a later date.

Students whose behaviour in school has led to an exclusion (either internal or external) this academic year, will not be permitted to attend. Would you also please read the attached information sheet regarding School Policy on Behavioural Concerns and return the reply slip to Mrs Lovelock with your deposit.

Please note that in the event of unforeseen circumstances requiring your son/daughter to drop out of the trip, the school cannot repay any money already paid to the travel company unless the company returns the money to the school or the place can be filled by another paying student. Please note that if a refund is available this can only be made after the trip accounts have been finalised.

If you wish for your child to join us on this trip, you will be invited to attend a parents’ evening where we will provide a detailed itinerary and answer any further questions. In the meantime, if there are any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Year 11 Prom

Dear Parent/ Carer

YEAR 11 PROM

As I am sure you are aware, at the end of Year 11, a Prom is held for all leavers to celebrate their time at Neatherd and all their hard work. This year our School Prom will be held at Wensum Valley Golf Club in Taverham. This is due to a significantly smaller year group than previous years and this venue represents better value for the reduced number attending.

Due to the location of this year’s venue, we have arranged optional transport from the school. The return journey from the School to the venue will cost £4 (a single or return journey is the same cost).

I do understand how special it is for family and friends to be able to gather at the school beforehand and see all the students ‘dressed to the nines’! I would, for this reason, like to recommend that all students arrive at the school between 5.30pm and 6.30pm. At 6.30pm, the coach will be leaving promptly, to arrive at Wensum Valley at 7.00pm.

If you choose to go directly to Wensum Valley, please do not arrive before 7.00pm. All guests will be asked to leave the venue by 11.30pm. Those using the coach transport will arrive back at school by midnight.

Although I realise that the Prom is a chance for all pupils to enjoy themselves and celebrate, I do ask for appropriate behaviour at all times, so it is enjoyable for all. The expected level of behaviour has been made clear in the attached ‘School-Parent-Pupil Agreement’. This needs to be completed and returned with your reply slip and payment.

There will be photographer at the venue for the whole evening who will develop and frame photos that night for £10 per photo. Additional, non-alcoholic drinks will also be available at the venue for guests to purchase.

In order to have everything finalised before Friday 25th May (when students’ study leave commences), I would ask that the completed ‘School-Parent-Pupil Agreement’ and payment of £24 for each ticket be returned to Mrs Lovelock at the payments hatch (outside Business 1) at lunchtimes, between 5th – 9th March and 19th – 23rd March 2012.

The ticket price includes drinks on arrival, an exquisite sit down meal, a disco and other entertainment during the evening as well as the hire of a fantastic venue which will be suitably dressed for the occasion.

I know all the pupils will enjoy what is sure to be a fantastic, memorable evening and hope to see you at the school earlier in the evening, for their ‘Promenade’! Thank you for your continued support.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Jacobs
Head of Upper School

Reply slip: To be handed in to Mrs Lovelock by Friday 30th March.

Name of student ___________________________ Form 11_______

Ticket choices:
I would like a ticket to the School Prom on the Friday 29th June 2012 (Cost: £24)

I will not be going to the prom on Friday 29th June 2012

Transport choices:
I will make my own way to Wensum Valley directly

I will be arriving at the school and then go to Wensum Valley in my own transport

I will be taking up the option of transport for £4.00.

Total amount payable £………………….

Dear Parent/Carer

Rewards Trip

Please note: locations for payments: Year 7 - payment collections hatch; Year 8 - attendance office; Year 9 - outside Maths 4; Year 10 - Drama Studio.

At this point in the school year we like to organise a Rewards Trip for all of those pupils who have shown excellent behaviour, hard work, a conscientious attitude and an attendance percentage of above 90% throughout the school year. FOR THOSE CHILDREN WHO HAVE BEEN PERSONALLY INVITED, the trip will take place on Thursday 27th June. The cost of the trip to Pleasurewood Hills will be £18.00. This includes transport to and from Pleasurewood Hills by coach, entrance fees and insurance.

In order for us to have a reasonable amount of time at the park, the coach will leave school at 9.00 am and will return by 4.30 pm. You will therefore need to arrange collection of your child from school at this time. Pupils need not wear school uniform, but please ensure that your son/daughter is suitably dressed for the trip, including sensible footwear as there will be a lot of walking around the park, as well as appropriate essentials for whatever the weather may send our way, e.g. sunscreen, hat, waterproofs! He/she should bring enough food and drink (no glass bottles please) to see him/her through the day. There will, of course, be refreshment vendors at the park, but we have no idea of prices or what the queues for these will be like and we would like to point out that any money or valuables taken will be carried at their own risk.

If you would like your son/daughter to take part in this trip, please complete and return the attached Personal Information and Parental Consent Form with your payment of £18.00between Monday 21st May and Wednesday 30th May at the location advised above. Cheques should be made payable to Dereham Neatherd High School (no joint cheques please). Any consents/payments returned after this date may not be accepted. Please ensure that your emergency contact number that you provide will be one applicable for the day in question.

Students are requested to be in groups of 4 for the day and we ask that the slip below is completed, fully detailing names and mobile numbers so staff can contact the group if necessary.

If there is anything you would like to discuss or you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school.

Yours sincerely

Download the Parent Information Handbook here.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Residential Geography Field Study – June 2012

After the successes of the past nine years, the geography department is once again organising a four-day (three-night) residential course to the Lake District, Cumbria. The main objective of the trip is to provide an excellent opportunity for students to study several areas of their geography GCSE syllabus in a contrasting environment to their own. The work covered will be the basis of their coursework (worth 25% of the final grade).

Taking place from Sunday 24th June to Wednesday 27th June 2012, pupils will be based at Ambleside Youth Hostel. Whilst there, students will undertake the following programme of study:

Sunday 24th June: Leave School by 6.00 am; Tourism Study at Ambleside
Monday 25th June: River Study in Langdale
Tuesday 26th June: Settlement Study at Kendal; Optional Leisure Activities
Wednesday 27th June: Return to School by 5.00pm.

The basic cost of the trip is £137 which includes travel, accommodation, food and insurance. On Tuesday 26th, students will have the opportunity to participate in an optional activity such as paint balling, archery, clay shooting, or horse riding. The prices for these activities will be between £35 and £45 and a letter relating specifically to this area of the trip will be forwarded later. The payment for this trip will be broken down and expected by the following dates:

1. Thursday 17th November 2011 £47 (non-refundable deposit of basic cost)
2. Thursday 12th January 2012 £45 (second payment of basic cost)
3. Tuesday 7th February 2012 £45 (third payment of basic cost)
4. Thursday 22nd March 2012 £35/£45 (cost of optional leisure activity)

If you wish your son/daughter to participate in the Lake District 2012 Residential Geography Field Study, please read the Behavious Statement (available to download, opposite) regarding the school’s behaviour policy, then complete and sign the attached reply slip. This should be taken with your £47 deposit via your son/daughter to Mrs Lovelock in the Payment Collections Room (outside Business 1) before school (8.25 – 8.40 am) any morning except Wednesday, as soon as possible but by Thursday 17th November at the latest. Cheques should be made payable to Dereham Neatherd High School.

Prior to the date of travel you will be required to complete a consent form and supply us with personal information regarding any medical conditions and special dietary needs that your son/daughter may have. These forms will be forwarded to you at the parents’ meeting which will be held in March.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me, and I look forward to seeing you at an informal parents evening which will be held in the New Year.

Yours Sincerely,

Dear Parent/Carer

Year 7 Curriculum Enhancement Trip to Africa Alive, Thursday 21st June 2012

As part of the multi-cultural focus of our Curriculum Enhancement Week we are arranging a Year 7 day trip to Africa Alive in Lowestoft on Thursday June 21st 2012. We anticipate that pupils will experience a thoroughly enjoyable day out whilst gaining an insight into aspects of life in Africa. Pupils will be able to explore the sights and sounds of Africa and discover giraffes, lions, cheetahs, hyenas and lots more African animals and birds. The park offers an awe-inspiring recreation of the African savannah, where the animals of the plains roam freely together as they would in the wild. (For a closer look at Africa Alive, visit the website: www.africa-alive.co.uk).

The learning objectives for the day will be:
• To research the differing environments for wildlife in Africa
• To develop an understanding of the habitats for wildlife in Africa
• To be able to explain the similarities and differences for wildlife in Africa and the UK

All students will be able to use their Self Manager, and Independent Enquirer skills.

We ask for a parental contribution of £16.00 per pupil towards the cost of entrance to the park, transport and insurance. Cheques should be made payable to Dereham Neatherd High School.

In response to LEA guidelines regarding Educational Visits and Journeys, we are enclosing a Personal Information and Parental Consent Form which must be completed and returned along with your payment and handed in to Mrs Lovelock in the Payment Collections Room (outside Business 1) during morning break or before school any day except Wednesday. Form and payment collections must be handed in by Friday 25th May at the latest. Please note that your son/daughter will not be able to take part in this trip unless this is completed in full and returned to Mrs Lovelock.

Would you also please ensure that your son/daughter is suitably dressed on the day for whatever the weather has to offer (school uniform is not required) and sound footwear is essential. The trip will take place during the normal school day with coaches leaving school at 8.55 am and returning to school by 3.20 pm in time for children to catch their normal transport home. Pupils who do not participate in this trip will be expected to attend school as normal, in full uniform. Pupils should bring a packed lunch and a drink – no glass bottles please. A packed lunch will be provided for those pupils in receipt of free school meals. Pupils may wish to bring a small amount of spending money for snacks or souvenirs.

If you have any questions or require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely

Dear Parent/Carer

Year 8 Ten-Pin Bowling, 19th June 2012

During Curriculum Enhancement Week (18th – 22nd June) your son / daughter is going to be based in school for the week following an activity’s programme based both outside and inside. The week’s programme will include taking part in striking games (Softball, Rounders) and net games (Tennis and Volleyball), Taekwondo, plus Outdoor Education problem- solving tasks. The aim of the week is to develop teamwork skills, and working together, whilst experiencing new activities.

The exact timetable that your son/daughter will follow will be on the PE noticeboard for him/her to refer to. They will need to be dressed in order to take part in physical activity at all times, so PE kit would be appropriate – either school PE kit, or other appropriate PE clothing. They need to be prepared to be outside whatever the weather, come rain or intense sunshine (I hope)!

In addition to the above, we would like to take your son / daughter ten pin bowling at Strikes! Under supervision, all pupils will walk from school to Strikes (opposite Morrisons) after lunch on Tuesday 19th June 2012. Pupils will either walk home or will need to be collected from Strikes afterwards at 3.15 pm – please indicate which will apply on the attached Parental Consent Form. If you are collecting your child from Strikes they will need to sign out before leaving. If you need to contact the group in the event of an emergency, the telephone number of Strikes is 01362 696910.

Can you please complete the attached Parental Consent Form and return to Mrs Lovelock in the Payment collections area (outside Business 1), during morning break (11.10am-11.25am) by Friday 25th May 2012 latest to allow your child to attend. Even if they do not wish to join in the bowling, they are welcome as spectators to support and cheer on the bowlers. The cost to take part in the Ten-pin bowling activity is £3.00 per person and includes one game each and insurance. Please indicate your preference on the consent form.

Yours sincerely

Year 7 Trip to Normandy

See the downloads (opposite) for the payment schedule.....

Dear Parents

YEAR 7 CURRICULUM ENHANCEMENT WEEK: 18th -22nd June 2012

During the week 18th -22nd June 2012 all Neatherd Students will have a week off normal timetable for Curriculum Enhancement. For Year 7 this will consist of varied linguistic and multicultural activities in school.

In addition to this, we are also pleased to be able to offer the opportunity to 96 Year 7 pupils to spend five days in Normandy during this week. There are so many benefits to such a trip: linguistically it is an opportunity for our pupils to practice the language learnt in the classroom to increase their fluency and confidence; culturally it provides invaluable insight into many aspects of French life and the history of this most beautiful of regions. A comprehensive programme of activities has been arranged to enhance cultural awareness, including: a trip to a French market with a task to make “THE best picnic lunch in France”, a loaf making session in a traditional bakery, a guided tour of Honfleur, a visit to Monet’s house and gardens and for the second year a showstopping trip to Paris and with a stop at La Tour Eiffel, a boat trip and much, much more. The group will stay in a beautiful, traditional building and there will be games and a magic show in the evening. Students last year gave us some fantastic feedback.

The cost of this trip will be £310.00 to include all food, accommodation, excursions, insurance and travel. We anticipate that there will be considerable demand for places on such a trip and regret that these have to be limited to 96. If you wish your child to participate in this activity, we would ask that you complete the reply slip below and return to Mrs. Lovelock, with an initial deposit of £100.00, in the payment collection room at morning break 11.10am – 11.25am any day except Wednesdays and by Friday 14th October 2011. Cheques should be made payable to DEREHAM NEATHERD HIGH SCHOOL. A letter giving exact details of a payment schedule will then follow but we expect payments to be during January and March. Please note that if demand should exceed availability, participants will be chosen on a first come, first served basis.

It is important to note that your child will need his/her own passport and a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to be able to take part in this trip. Prior to your son/daughter travelling with us you will be required to complete a consent form and supply us with personal information regarding any medical conditions and special dietary needs that he/she may have. These forms will be forwarded to you at a later date.

If you have any questions about the trip or would like to clarify any issues, please do not hesitate to contact me at school.

Yours sincerely

Year 11 Study Leave Begins

Dear Parents/Carers and Year 11 students

Arrangements for Year 11 Leavers’ Day – Friday 25th May 2012

Please may I take the opportunity to share with you the procedures for Leavers’ Day. To mark this special day, we would like to suggest that students come in to school wearing smart non-uniform clothes. However, we understand that tradition dictates that school shirts need to be signed (!), so we recommend that students bring with them a school shirt on Leavers’ Day just for this purpose.

Lesson one will be spent based in form rooms with their tutor, giving them an opportunity to say their farewells to their tutor group, plus practise their ‘farewell presentation’, which is happening in the Leavers’ Assembly at 9.45am. At 9.45am the students will meet as a year group in the canteen. Text books that are no longer needed can be handed in, and the Leavers’ Hoodies, Year Book and Year 11 photo can be collected. The Leaver’s Assembly can then officially start!

After morning break all Year 11 students will return to the canteen for a bite to eat, and have their final get together. At 12.15pm Year 11 will officially be on Study Leave and will be expected to leave the school site. Students will need to arrange their own transport home. Those students in exams in the afternoon will obviously remain on site.

It goes without saying that we are not expecting our students to be wandering around town, or going to Northgate High School. Should students cause a problem in the local community during Study Leave we would have to consider sanctions, for example, not being permitted to go to the Prom, so please do discuss this at home. If your son/daughter is unable to get transport home please can you complete the form attached and return it to Mrs Cox. Supervised study rooms will be available in the afternoon to allow these students to do quiet study/revision.

After half term, study rooms in school will be available for Year 11 students to work in. Students will need to sign in at Reception then ask Mrs Beckett (in the library) where to go.
Finally, Thursday 23rd August is GCSE results day and we cordially invite you to accompany your son/daughter to the canteen at Neatherd to collect their results. In addition, for the first time, we are asking if you would like to donate any old school blazers, ties, PE kit and school shoes that you no longer require. If you would like to donate this uniform then please bring it with you on Thursday 23rd August from 9am and we will collect it.

We wish you all the very best of luck with your forthcoming exams – your opportunity to show that all of your hard work has been worthwhile.

Yours sincerely

Dear Parent/Carer

Re: Spelling Bee Competition

Neatherd High School has been successful in qualifying for the live Spelling Bee Competition. Your son/daughter has been selected as one of our elite spellers and helped our school qualify for the next round. Neatherd is one of only two schools from Norfolk represented at the live regional semi-final.

The live spelling events are exciting and entertaining. They are held in Cineworld Cinemas in Cambridge. The teams take part in two spelling challenges: The Spelling Playoff and The Quick Fire Challenge. Hopefully our team of four year 7 pupils will do well on the day.

The competition is on Thursday 17th May. Pupils will depart from and return to Neatherd High School. We will travel to Cambridge by minibus, leaving school at 8.45am. We anticipate leaving Cambridge at 2.00pm to arrive back at school for 3.30pm approx.

I attach two Parental Consent Forms. Both need to be signed and taken to Mrs Lovelock in the Payment Collections Area (outside Business1) during morning break (on any day except Wednesday) as soon as possible and by Friday 4th May at the latest. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOUR SON/DAUGHTER WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE PART IN THIS EVENT UNLESS THE PARENTAL CONSENT FORM IS COMPLETED IN FULL AND RETURNED TO MRS LOVELOCK BY THE DATE SHOWN.

Yours sincerely

Dear Parent/Carer

Partnership Games – Taverham High School – 14th May 2012

As part of the School’s Sports Partnership programme, this year we are again organising an event that gives pupils the opportunity to compete in their sport/activity against a number of other schools in our area. The Partnership Games will take place at Taverham High School on Monday 14th May. Your son/daughter has been selected to play, representing Dereham Neatherd High School, in the U14 Mixed Hockey Squad/ U14 Mixed Basketball Squad. They will be playing against pupils from Costessey, Hellesdon, Reepham, Northgate, and Taverham High Schools. Please be aware that pupils may be photographed during this event and these may be used by the schools for newsletters, and may appear in the EDP.

Your son/daughter will need to be dressed in Neatherd PE kit and bring necessary equipment for their activity eg, astro-turf trainers, shin-pads and gum-shields for hockey. Please also ensure they are suitably prepared for inclement weather and that they bring a snack and drink with them (no glass bottles please).

I would like to point out that this event will be staffed by different teachers from the participating schools. Your child will spend the afternoon watching and participating in their sport, and will be instructed not to leave the sports area apart from going to changing rooms/toilets. However, due to the nature of the event and the fact that I will be helping to run an activity, it will be impossible for me to maintain visual contact with the whole group for the whole afternoon. Your son/daughter will be told where I will be located throughout the afternoon if they need to contact me.

We will be leaving school at 3pm and travelling by minibus. We expect to return to school at approximately 6.30pm. You will therefore need to arrange to meet you child at school at this time. If you need to contact the group in the event of an emergency during the event, you will be able to do so on 07827 870541.

If you would like them to compete, then please complete the accompanying parental consent form and return to Mr Roberts (PE Department) by Friday 11th May at the latest. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you require any further information.

Yours sincerely

This year at Neatherd High School we are celebrating our centenary. For 100 years pupils have been educated on site, preparing them for life. As part of the centenary, we want YOU to design a time capsule to help capture our school for future generations. There are criteria that need to be met which are outlined here, so think carefully about what you will be putting into the time capsule…

Sets 8e/Gg1, 8e/Gg2, 8e/Gg3 and 8e/Gg4

As an integral part of the Year 8 curriculum, we are arranging a field study trip to the Norfolk Broads at Wroxham. The purpose of this visit is to enhance pupils’ learning about tourism and conservation. Pupils will go on a two-hour cruise from Wroxham to Salhouse Broad and will complete a study of land use in Wroxham. Pupils will be issued with a booklet which guides their understanding, observations and recording of data and information. This will be used as a follow-up in the classroom which leads to an assessment activity.

We would be grateful to receive a contribution of £12.00 towards the cost of transport and the river cruise. Please complete the attached Parental Consent Form and return it with your payment to Mrs Lovelock in the Payment Collections Office (outside Business 1) at morning break any day except Wednesday between 11.10am and 11.25am as soon as possible and by Thursday 29th March at the latest. No collection is available on Friday 30th March. Cheques should be made payable to Dereham Neatherd High School.

Would you also please ensure on the day that your son/daughter is dressed in school uniform with suitable ‘top wear’ depending on the weather. We expect to arrive back at Neatherd around 4.15 pm. Your child may then either walk home or you should arrange to meet the minibus at school at that time to collect them. Please clarify on Parental Consent form.

It is a very good idea to have extra, warm clothing, in case of inclement weather. They will need to bring a packed lunch.
Re: Scratch Off Competition

The ‘Scratch-Off’ Competition is an afternoon competition for a number of Norfolk schools to design and program a game using ‘scratch’ software. Six students will represent Neatherd High School and your son/daughter has been selected as they have been judged to have one of the best six games in the school, which is a fantastic achievement.

The competition is on Tuesday 1st May. Pupils will depart from and return to Neatherd High School. We will travel to UEA, Norwich by minibus, leaving school at 1.15pm. We anticipate leaving UEA at 4.00pm to arrive back at school for 4.30pm approx.

The attached Parental Consent Form should be completed, signed and taken to Mrs Lovelock in the Payment Collections Area (outside Business1) during morning break (on any day except Wednesday) as soon as possible and by Friday 27th April at the latest.
HALF TERM VALUE: LEADERSHIP

This week's THEME is LEADING BY EXAMPLE...

Regardless of how others see it, setting a good example always works to your benefit. Besides the possibility of influencing others, you attract positive people and situations by your positive actions.

Have your life shine as an example to others. Regardless of your past, you can direct your future in any direction you chose.
Memories of a Holocaust Survivor

HARRY BIBRING
Harry Bibring was born on 26th December 1925 in Vienna.

In 1939, before the “Anschluss” of Austria, Harry and his family were living in the 6th district in Vienna in a flat here they had a good standard of living. His father had a men's-wear business in Vienna’s 15th district.

After the “Anschluss” Harry had to leave the Gymnasium and was allocated to go to a secondary school which was designated to have all the Jewish children who had to leave the Gymnasiums. After Kristallnacht Harry’s family was locked out of their flat for a week and they had to stay in a flat which used to house about 50 Jewish women and children in one place. His father was taken to jail on his way to work on the 10th of November and released at about the same time that the rest of the family was allowed to return to their flat. Harry’s father's business was looted and destroyed on the 10th November and it was when they all got back to the flat that his parents decided they had to leave Vienna. At first the family was planning to go to Shanghai but Harry’s father was robbed on his way to the travel agent trying to buy tickets. It was then that it was decided that Harry’s sister and Harry himself would come to England on the Kindertransport and the plan was that the parents would follow as soon as possible. That never happened. Harry’s father died of a heart attack on the van when they tried to take him away in November 1940. His mother then lived with her sister in lodgings until they were both deported first to Izbica and then to Sobibor in about June 1942.

Harry’s father arranged for a Mr. Landsman, with whose mother he had had some contact in about 1936, to act as guarantors for them and he picked them up when they arrived: “I remember going to the Vienna West Bahnhof with my sister and our parents to get on the train at 10pm on the 13th March 1939 with about 600 other kids. The following day the train went slowly through Germany until it reached the Dutch border. Once it crossed over into Holland we were met on the platform by Jewish volunteers from Holland who gave us sweets and toys. We crossed to England on the night ferry from Hook of Holland to Harwich and arrived at Liverpool Street station in the afternoon of the 15th March 1939.”

After war broke out on 3rd September 1939, Harry was evacuated with the school he was attending in Hackney, to Fletton, near Peterborough. He was billeted there with the Headmaster of the local grammar school who was a devout Christian and had never met a Jew in his life. After finding out that Jews do not have horns, he was interested in Harry’s experiences and was very kind.

After his 14th birthday Harry left school and returned to London. His sister was evacuated privately with the family of the man who arranged Harry’s and her Kindertransport so he went to live with him in the empty house. Harry started to work for him for 15 shillings per week as shop and errand boy. He did not like this one bit and so he moved out and moved into lodgings in the same house where his sister was living who, by then, had returned to London and had also broken away from this family.

On his 18th birthday Harry applied to join the RAF for flying duties. He passed all the physical and educational requirements but when it came out that his mother was alive and living in enemy territory, Harry was turned down on the grounds that, if captured, this would be a tool they could use to get information out of him. They offered to enrol him in the Pioneer Corps but he did not fancy digging latrines.

After a while, he enrolled in evening classes at the Polytechnic in Regent Street. Harry enrolled on a five year course, then continued with further evening class studies there and at other colleges until he became a qualified Chartered Engineer and also had management qualifications. In all, this took about 14 years of evening studies as he had to earn a living at the same time.

Towards the end of the war in early 1945, Harry met Muriel through her brother, who he had met about six months earlier and was a good friend. Until then Harry lived in various lodgings but when Muriel's mother heard that he was fending for himself in strangers’ houses she asked him to live with her. That enabled Harry to get to know Muriel better and they got engaged in 1946 and married in 1947.

Harry continues to live in London.
