21.09.11 Year 10 GCSE Information Evening

Re: GCSE information evenings

Dear Parent or Guardian,

I am writing to invite you to attend our GCSE Information evenings. There will be 2 such evenings during the year, arranged especially for parents and guardians of students beginning Year 10. These students are entering a key phase of their education: the start of their GCSE courses. Our aim is to give you an overview of the requirements of those courses, in order that you can support your child and help them to achieve the best results possible.

The first evening will be taking place on Wednesday September 21st at 6.00pm and will focus on the government’s ‘EBACC’ core subjects: English, Maths, Science, Humanities (History or Geography), and a language (French or Spanish). The evening will commence with some general information about GCSE courses, and be followed by brief presentations from representatives of each of the above subject areas. We will also be distributing the KS4 Curriculum Handbook, as this provides you with an outline of each course. There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the evening. I am also inviting some of last year’s GCSE students, to come and give you as parents, some of their ‘top tips’ on how best to support your child’s studying at home. I anticipate that the evening will last approximately 1 hour.

The second evening will take place on Monday December 5th, again at 6.00pm. This will focus on the option subjects. As not all parents need to hear about each one of the option requirements, this evening will adopt the format of a rota, with parents able to visit representatives only from the options taken by their child. Once again, this should last for approximately one hour.

These evenings will provide an excellent opportunity for you to fully understand the requirements of your child’s GCSE courses, notably the demands of controlled assessment, not at the end of Year 11, but in fact from the start of Year 10. We very much look forward to seeing you, and to working with you to make the ‘Class of 2013’ our best yet.

I would be grateful if you could indicate below if you are able to attend, by Friday September 16th please. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at school.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Sonia Walker
Director of Language College
Please return this form to Mrs Walker by Friday September 16th 2011
