World Book Week Events

Dear Parent/Carer,

WORLD BOOK WEEK – 27th February 3rd MARCH

We are delighted that as part of our World Book Week celebrations we have secured visits from THREE talented and hugely successful authors, plus creative book cover sessions with our very own talented book illustrator.

Monday 27th February we are hosting a talk by the talented and charismatic Julian Sedgwick, author of The Mysterium Series, Ghosts of Shanghai and graphic novel, Dark Satanic Mills. This will be Julian’s fourth visit to us (he’s that good) where he will be entertaining Y7 and invited Y6 students. Selected groups will also be involved in creative writing workshops with Julian during the day. His books will be available to purchase and personally signed ranging from £6 for novels and £10 for graphic novel.

Thursday 2nd March- WORLD BOOK DAY we are delighted to welcome back our Patron of Reading, Alex Scarrow. Alex, best known for his award winning YA series Timeriders, will be presenting a lively and interactive talk to all Y10s focussing on his latest terrifying thriller about a virus that can think causing destruction in its wake. Alex will also be holding creative writing workshops with selected Y9 and Y10 classes. Books will again be available for £6.00.

Friday 3rd March Year 8 and Year 9 will be entertained by an engaging and humorous talk with the fabulous Alexander Gordon Smith, author of the YA Furnace series. Alex will also be running creative writing sessions to selected classes throughout the day. Books available to purchase at £6 for Furnace series and £8 for Fury.

If any student would like to see a particular author above but are not in the year group stated please see Mrs Hunt to arrange this opportunity.

Along with all these wonderful opportunities for our students to hear and be inspired by authors there will be lots of other events that your child can get involved in throughout the week.

Thursday 3rd March –will be a NON-UNIFORM day – staff and students are encouraged to dress as a character from a book (prizes awarded) money raised will be used to fund our new ‘Patron of Reading’- an established published author who will work with all our students throughout the year providing a high expertise in all areas of reading and writing. Students not in costume will be required to wear school uniform.

We are once again holding our popular ‘Book Swap’ every Lunchtime-an opportunity for your child to exchange a pre-loved book for a new adventure or purchase a book for 20p.

Neatherd Reads returns for another year- each day from 3.15-3.30pm every student and member of staff will be encouraged to pick up their book and read- whichever lesson they are in.

COMPETITIONS!

Get ready- BAKE! There will also be a cake competition Wednesday lunchtime-bake a cake based on a book/character and bring in for judging- cakes will then be sold and money raised will go towards our Patron of Reading. Collect an entry form from the Library or any English teacher.

The Inter House Book Quiz held during form time.

Bookface competition- students and staff are invited to get creative by replacing their face in a photograph with books and genres previously unseen in the library leading to new reading opportunities. A camera is available at the library desk or send your creations to lgill3nrs@nsix.org.uk

We hope the week will encourage, inspire and ignite a spark of enthusiasm for reading for pleasure for the whole school community.

Yours sincerely
