We have a close working relationship with the University of East Anglia and are pleased to have been asked to participate in some important academic research. Please read the letter attached and let us know if you do not want your child to take part in the study, which will last around 20 minutes and take place on Wednesday 8th July. You can do this by asking your child to return the slip attached or by contacting me directly at school. Only around forty students from the year group will be selected.

University of East Anglia Student Research:
How do children judge the size of objects?

Dear Parent/Guardian,

My name is Carmen Fisher and I am a PhD Psychology researcher at the University of East Anglia. I am writing to ask for your help with my study on the development of perceived size of objects.

The study will involve me seeing your child individually for an experiment that will last approximately 20 minutes. I will ask your child a few basic questions about themselves (age, gender and
handedness) which will be recorded, then I will ask them to complete a short computer task. During the task, he/she will be asked to observe pictures of objects on a computer screen and respond to them by using a keyboard. The responses will be recorded and all data will be kept anonymous. You are welcome to withdraw your child and his/her information from the experiment at any point by contacting me or my supervisor. The university’s ethical committee has approved this research.

There is no need to reply to this letter if you are happy for your child to participate. If you prefer for him/her not to take part, please fill in the from below and return it to the school and
your child will not be involved in the assessment.

If you have any questions or wish to know the general findings of the study please don’t hesitate to contact me on: carmen.fisher@uea.ac.uk . You are welcome to contact the Principal Investigator and my supervisor, Dr. Irene Sperandio (i.sperandio@uea.ac.uk).

If you would like to speak to an Ethics Officer of the University not involved in the study, you may contact Dr. Piers Fleming (P.Fleming@uea.ac.uk).

You will receive a letter after the experiment takes place to inform you of what your child participated in.

Thank you for your help.

Carmen Fisher (MSc).
