We are extremely proud of the attitude, commitment and diligence of our staff. The department is staffed, and led, by mathematicians whose teaching methods aim to engage students to see the benefits and interest in the subject as a whole. Every one of us is committed to doing the best for all our students and we will do everything we can to assist in their progress.
Accommodation and staff
The department has seven mathematics classrooms all equipped with interactive whiteboards. We are in a very fortunate position that all of the maths teachers are dedicated maths specialists.
We currently teach a full range of high school qualifications. At Key Stage 3 and 4 we teach a progressive five year curriculum, with each year building on the learning that took place during the previous years. We currently use Edexcel for our GCSE examinations however, with the recent changes to the curriculum this may change in the future if we feel that a different exam board would meet our pupils’ needs better. At Key Stage 5 we use the AQA syllabuses. Outside of the class room pupils are supported by Mymaths, an online piece of mathematical software that can be used to not only set tasks but also for pupils to consolidate their understanding by going through lessons.
Every year, the students in the top sets for mathematics in year 9 participate in the Intermediate Maths Challenge – problem solving tests run by the UK Mathematics Trust. In recent years, more than half our pupils who entered have received an award, and some have even been selected to go forward to the even more challenging phase of the competition. We also enter a select team into the regional Mathematics Challenge Team Finals in which we compete against other schools from across the county. We also currently run both weekly chess and Warhammer clubs, both of which are very popular!
We have an incredibly good rate of take-up of the subject at both further and higher education. In the past, we have successfully entered students onto maths degree courses at Oxford, Cambridge, Warwick and Imperial Universities as well as many others. We are also very proud about the large number of our pupils that go on to study maths at Dereham Sixth form college; AS and A level maths is incredibly popular!
