Business & Enterprise

Welcome to the Business Studies department

Although this is a relatively small department, the subject has been long established at the school, with many of our students choosing to take the subject at A-level.

The subject is taught by one specialist teacher, thus ensuring that students get a consistent approach to their teaching and learning.

The course
The subject is taught in Years 10 and 11 as one of the options. The students follow the AQA specification for their GCSE award.

Through business studies, students gain business knowledge, understanding and skills. They begin to understand current events in local, national and global contexts. They learn how to use relevant terms, concepts and methods effectively to describe business and economic behaviour. Students also consider business ethics and the impact of business on the environment.

Because of the vocational nature of the subject, every effort is given to provide students with a hands on approach towards their learning. This means students are experiencing the subject in “real” situations. To aid their understanding, local businesses are sought to come in and act as guest speakers.

In GCSE Business Studies, students must sit two examinations. One examination assesses the students on their knowledge and understanding of Business Start Up. The other examination tests students on their knowledge and understanding of any aspect of the course.

Students also have 12 hours to carry out research for a controlled assessment. They then have a time limit of three hours to write a report. They must write this report within four weeks of completing their research. This is a completely independent task done at the start of Year 11.

To ensure that support is in place, students can attend a number of support sessions which will be made available. These will be provided after school and during lunchtimes.

At present the subject runs one trip which takes the place at the end of Year 10. This is to Thorpe Park where students get an opportunity to listen to a lecture on human resources and of course, enjoy the rides!
